The Home Affairs Minister has announced radical reforms to the Migration program to be implemented by the end of 2023. Key points on the announcement include:
- A three tired system where Tier 1 (highly skilled on high salaries); Tier 2 (those earning above the income Threshold) and Tier 3 (lower wage cohort (hospitality etc). The higher the Tier within which an application is made, the easier it will be to get a visa.
- TSMIT to rise to $70,000 for Tier 2 occupations.
- Labour Market Testing to be abolished in favour of new skills assessments.
- Flexibility for sponsored workers with six months available between leaving one sponsored position and finding another.
- Abolishment of skills lists and implementation of an evidence based skilled need program.
- Pathways to permanent residency for all temporary sponsored workers.
The government has announced a second round of consultation later in 2023 with implementation late 2023.
