For those of you who have not seen the Prime Ministers announcement this week here is a link to the announcement (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jE0xzf7kH0).
Whilst the detail is scant what is clear from his announcement is that international students will be a major focus in reducing the overall migration numbers. He says the Department will look at those occupations that are not really in demand and will make it harder to study in those areas and stay after the completion of study. He has also announced a review of institutions offering courses outside the university system.
The inference is that the Short Term skills list will be examined with a view to shedding occupations available for student visas with a further focus on changing the graduate visa program.
Until the full detail of the announcement is released it is difficult to advise what steps to take, but those studying with a view to transitioning to a graduate visa should examine all their options as the ability to enrol in further study or to gain a graduate visa may be impacted.
At this stage no changes have been made to the program and we shall update as further details are released.
