As we have published in previous newsletters a number of times now, the employer sponsored migration program will be amended in the second half of 2024 with the introduction of the Skills in Demand visa which will replace the current 482 program.
Those that currently hold 482 visas should be able to progress and transition to permanent residency at the end of their 482 visa.
It is important to note that to transition to PR from your 482 visa you must have held the 482 for two years and you must have worked in the nominated position for the required period (2years).
Subclass 482 visas commence the day they are issued. So if you received a 482 visa offshore and did not take up the position for some months after grant of the visa, you will fall short of the requirement to transition to permanent residency.
Trades and workers earning less than $70,000 per annum will fall into the lowest category under the new program. This combined with amendments to the skills list may see many not be able to qualify for the new temporary visa.
If you fall well short of the required two years on your current 482 then our advice is to apply for a new two year 482 visa now to preserve your pathway to permanent residency. Once this is locked in the looming changes should not impact your future prospects.
Note: The TSMIT is also increasing to $73,150 on 1 July 2024 and all new 482 and 186 nomination filed after this date will need to may this new salary level.
